FAQ

Questions

Answers

Q: Who should apply?
A: If you are a motivated eighth-grade or ninth-grade student preparing to attend a college or university, then you should apply for admission to Stevenson. If you are already in grade 10 or 11 and have a strong academic record, you may want to consider applying to Stevenson as a transfer.

Q: How to start my application?
A: There are three options for you to apply to Stevenson:

  1. Fill out our online inquiry form, and we will send you a brochure and preliminary application.
  2. Download all application forms from the application download page and mail completed forms to the admission office.
  3. Apply online through our online application system.

Q: When should I begin the application process?
A: Applications completed by February 15 will receive priority consideration. If you mail your preliminary application before January 15, you probably will be able to complete your application in time for our first round of decisions. Even if you've missed the February 15 date, though, you can still go ahead and apply; cancellations sometimes create openings as late as July and August.

Q: What if I'm an international student?
A: Because Stevenson doesn't offer English as a Second Language, all international students must be able to demonstrate proficiency in English. Therefore, if you're applying for grade 9 or 10, you must submit the SSAT; if you're applying for grade 11 or 12, you must submit the PSAT or the SAT. A TOEFL score alone will not prove that you are proficient in English.

If you need a student visa, we will issue you an I-20 form only after you have accepted enrollment and have returned your enrollment agreement and the enrollment fee.

Q: What is considered a completed application?
A: The Board of Admission considers an application complete when we have received the following:

  1. Your formal application, containing biographical information.
  2. Parent Statement filled out by your parents.
  3. References from your current English and math teachers, as well as a reference from your current principal or counselor.
  4. An official transcript-sent by your school-that has your first-semester grades from the current year and also your grades from at least one year previous.
  5. Two essays: one that you've written at home, and another that you write during your Stevenson visit or interview.
  6. A personal interview.
  7. Your score results from the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT), PSAT or the SAT. The SSAT is the required test for 9th and 10th grade applicants.

Q: What is the SSAT?
A: The SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) is widely used by independent schools to assess a candidate's academic potential. If you are applying to several schools that require the SSAT, you can have the test results sent to those schools by putting each school's name and code on the answer sheet. Stevenson's school code is 6082. The test is administered at locations all over the world six times each year. You should look for a test center close to your home. If you would like to receive priority consideration for admission to Stevenson, you should take the SSAT in December or January.

Q: When will I know if I am accepted?
A: We mail our first decision letters on March 10, and later ones whenever applications are completed and have been reviewed by the Board of Admission. Admission decisions will also be posted online. Use your password (sent to you by the admission office) to review your application status and decision letter. If you're admitted to Stevenson, we assume that you will successfully complete your current school year.

Q: Why visit Stevenson?
A: First, you need to see if you like our school and feel comfortable here; second, you need to interview with one of our admission officers so we can learn about you and so you can ask questions about Stevenson's programs and curriculum.

To make an appointment, call the Admission Office at 831-625-8309. or email us at info@stevensonschool.org. We schedule visits for Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., so try to have several dates in mind before you call. If you're already familiar with Stevenson, we can interview you after 2 p.m. You may live a great distance from Stevenson; if so, you can request a local interview with a Stevenson representative if we are traveling your area.
