5th Grade

Welcome to the fifth grade! Referred to as "Looking Forward", the classroom is named after a poem written by Robert Louis Stevenson, which describes a child’s growth into a young adult. The fifth grade class spends the year preparing for young adulthood, and they are "looking forward" to their future in the Middle School.

At first glance, the fifth grade class is busy and working hard in all that they do; however, if you take a closer look, they are also learning life-long skills that will help them to be successful in the Middle School and beyond. In social studies, students study early American history from the first people in North America to those of the Colonial period. Students read great novels, such as Sign of the Beaver and The Cay, during reading that connect to their studies in history and also add to their understanding of themselves and their world. In science, students learn about the natural world and conduct experiments to test hypothesizes. During math class, time is spent problem solving and working together to find solutions to real-life problems. In language arts, students learn the importance of communicating to a variety of audiences through a cross-curricular study of what makes writing worth reading. Students continue to develop their keyboarding and computer skills. Fifth grade students attend weekly classes in Spanish, art, music, dance, and physical education.
