1st Grade

Welcome to the first grade, "Storybook Land." The first grade classroom is named after Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem, The Land of Story-Books, from his collection of poems, A Child’s Garden of Verses.

In the first grade, students have fun learning in everything they do. Reading, math, language arts, spelling, math, and computers are integrated with science and social studies themes. Art and craft projects enhance and extend the themes. During reading time, students love to read stories as well as to listen to children’s literature like The Wizard of Oz and Charlotte’s Web.  In language arts, they practice writing skills and create their own stories, poems, and other forms of writing in journals. First graders learn core words, phonics-based words and challenge words in spelling. They practice computer skills on class computers. Students learn about animals and plants, insects and reptiles, the solar system, and many other exciting topics in science. During social studies, the first grade learns about American history, studies other countries and cultures, and explores other relevant social studies themes. In math, students work with numbers concepts using manipulatives, models, measuring instruments, and other tools leading to symbolic applications.  Students sing songs, play games, and learn to speak and write Spanish during Spanish class. In art class, first graders learn the color wheel and explore a variety of mediums.  They sing traditional and modern children’s songs and learn to play a variety of instruments in music class. The first graders have dance classes and physical education classes weekly. The first grade class takes theme-related field trips to many local sites. Students perform in the Lower School’s annual winter performance.
