4th Grade
Ahoy, mate! Welcome to the fourth grade, the "Pirate’s Cove." The fourth grade classroom is named for the fact that Robert Louis Stevenson wrote many poems and stories about the adventures of pirates. Perhaps his most notable pirate tale is Treasure Island, where a young Jim Hawkins encounters a band of pirates and joins them in a wild adventure in search of hidden treasures. From the first day of school, the fourth grade class sets sail in search of their own treasures and has many great adventures along the way.
Always busy, the fourth grade crew explores and discovers the multitudes of treasures of California state history in social studies. Language arts and reading skills are developed as they read rich novels, such as Riding Freedom, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and By the Great Horn Spoon. Whether they are acting out a scene from a story, writing a journal response for literature circles, or researching native California plants on the computers for science, students are engaged and eager to learn. In math, students become more proficient in their abilities to problem solve. In addition to taking weekly art, music, dance and physical education classes, the fourth grade continues with their study of Spanish.
