2nd Grade
Welcome to the second grade, the "Ivy Nook!" The second grade classroom is named after a line of poetry from Robert Louis Stevenson’s, Summer Sun. Ivy means new life and growth, and nook represents a cozy, comfortable space. The "Ivy Nook" is an inviting, safe place for children to learn and grow.
Everyday is an exciting day in the second grade; there is never a dull moment. Students learn to plant their own garden and watch tadpoles grow into frogs in science. During reading, they read adventure stories, such as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Flat Stanley. Students publish their own stories in language arts, and in math, they begin learning their multiplication facts. Students practice their computer skills, and learn about early American history and Native Americans during social studies. The second graders put on a Thanksgiving play for their parents. Students also sing songs and play games in Spanish class, learn to dance, and sing harmonies and play instruments in music. In art, they create masterpieces, and in physical education, they learn teamwork and sportsmanship.
We invite you to learn more about the "Ivy Nook." We will send you an informational viewbook, as well as an application for admission to the second grade. You many arrange a parent interview and tour, and a student school visit after you’ve completed and returned the formal application. In the application packet, you’ll find all of the information that you will need to complete the admission process. Of course, we’re always here to help if you need us.
