View from the Back Porch

I've been writing View from the Back Porch for a number of years. I hope through it to describe aspects of Stevenson that might not be "visible" in other communications.

If you would like my view on something about Stevenson, please let me know. I'd be glad to hear from you.

With Liberty and Justice for all

The fall production this year by the Stevenson Players is “Twelve Angry Jurors,” an adaptation of Reginald Rose’s award-winning classic, “Twelve Angry Men” that is as relevant today in terms of its depiction of prejudice and personal struggle as it was when it first appeared in 1954 on CBS TV’s drama series, “Studio One.”

The casting by Director Anne Marie Hunter was stunning; the performances were flawless. Set in the intimacy of three-quarter round on the stage in Keck Auditorium, we in the audience were immediately aware of actors falling out of character. We saw none.

Shut up in a room to decide whether or not a young man is guilty of killing his father, and voting initially (11-1) in favor of conviction, the twelve jurors slowly and painfully reveal themselves to each other and, gaining courage from what they learn about themselves and their colleagues, strip away their biases and examine through different eyes the evidence presented by the prosecution. It was gripping.

So, congratulations to Kailee Ayaar ’09, Matt McKay ’12, Margeaux Gallo ’09, Jackie Choi ’12, Natalie Jensen ’11, Lindi Lewis ’10, Sam Dickstein ’11, Jeff LaRocque ’10, Julia Holden ’10, Akari Kubo ’10, G Pepe ’09, and Ben Chodosh ’10 on a job well done; and congratulations as well to those behind the scenes who make it all possible, including Sam Sklar ’11 on lights and Kalinda Bittner ’11 as stage manager (who also played the guard). It was another great production by our Stevenson Players.

Show times are tonight, Friday and Saturday, November 6-8, at 7:30 pm.
